Stance

Stance, often mistaken and merged into one element with exigence, is a very important rhetorical element. When we write about some life experience we want to express how we felt and what’s our opinion about that event. When we argue a topic, we often take a side which aligns with our personal beliefs. Those expressions are a stance.

When I wrote my literacy narrative, my stance was very personal, emotional, grateful and positive. I wrote about my childhood, about my Mother and her influence on my literacy. I also expressed my willingness to share my enthusiasm with others.

“Reading and writing is a very important part of my life. It defines who I am, and where I am going. It helps me to understand myself, to become a better person and to express myself. I will be forever grateful for this gift I received, and I will never stop giving it back to the world, by sharing my light and enthusiasm, and encouraging other people to read”.

In the expository essay, my stance had to stay neutral due to the genre specifications. It was based on the research I have done:

“Throughout this essay my stance has stayed the same, I believe that women and men are equally capable of becoming a pilot and they both should be given equal opportunities and chances to do so”.

During writing my argumentative essay my stance was changing while I was discovering more interesting fact. I think that writing argumentative essay was one of the most important lessons I received this semester. I entered this with my own stance, based on my own experience. During the research I saw other people’s comments, opinions and real experiences that shocked me and made me feel really angry. I didn’t realize that discrimination had such a negative impact on women in aviation. I also reexamined my own life and times at the airport and discovered some biases I wasn’t aware of when I was a little girl. This whole experience made me so curious and grateful for the possibilities of accessing all the information from around the world in any given minute.

“My stance is very passionate as flying is my own hobby and I went though the described path myself. It is very personal to me to speak about women in aviation while I am one of them. Even though I could understand why men don’t like presence of females at the airport I can’t understand why they underestimate our value. It’s outdated and I will never agree with them”.
