Purpose

The purpose of writing a paper can vary and influence the genre and other rhetorical elements. During this course I noticed how the way I address my purpose changes my paper.

When I wrote the argumentative essay I noticed that

“The purpose of this essay is to show and prove why there’s not so many women in aviation. People would think it is their choice, but even if they are right, what made women make that choice and not to become a pilot? Those arguments are presented in my paper. Another purpose is to change it, and hopefully after my audience will read my essay they will understand how hurtful trusting stereotypes could be. It literally leads people to doubt themselves and changes their lives. By following stereotypes we stop ourselves from growth. I truly hope that my essay could open the eyes of every single person who still believes in them”.

As I wrote in my reflection paper regarding my expository essay :

“The purpose of this expository essay is to present the problem of lack of women in aviation, what are the reasons behind it and to show the ways to fix the existing problem. As a female pilot myself it is a touching and important topic worth exploring. I also believe that the conclusion of my essay should be heard by every single women and men in the world to change the existing stereotypes that stop them from making their dreams come true and limit others”.

Those two examples indicate how different purpose can influence what content you want to feature in your work. In the argumentative essay the purpose is to argue something, show writer’s stance while in the expository essay the stance stays neutral and the purpose is to inform the audience of some chosen topic.
