CLO 6

Locate research sources (including academic journal articles, magazine and newspaper articles) in the library’s databases or archives and on the Internet and evaluate them for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias.

During our course we learned how to search on the library website and how to determine whether the source is valid or not. When I searched for my sources I looked at the author’s and checked their credibility.

I used their thoughts and researches by citing it in my paper. In my expository essay I wrote:

Another example of research based on gender in the aviation industry is a study done by Massoud Bazargan and Vitaly Guzhva, which analyzed the impact of gender, age and experience of pilots on aviation accidents. From the surveys and databases it was concluded that the ratio of pilot error to the total number of accidents is higher for women, although “male general aviation pilots are taking more risks than female pilots and those risks lead to more fatal accidents” (Bazargan and Guzhva 966).

To have this sentence cited in my paper I had to first search for book that features problem of differences between genders in aviation, then access it, save it in pdf format (provided by the website) and read it thoroughly. After I decided if I want to use it in my paper and my research I did some notes and decided which research and which data I want to use in my essay.

Another example of using research and sources is :

In the Naval Postgraduate School in California it was noticed that “White male students succeed at a rate 10-20 percent greater than female and minority students for the overall flight program” (Miller 10).

This is another example of a great source I found in the CUNY Library search engine. Twentieth century research from the Naval Postgraduate School in California that I wouldn’t be able to access or find if I wasn’t CUNY student.

This CLO taught me that it is important to check all the sources for the credibility and validity. Depending on the paper we write we might want to use sources from specifics times written by specific people (maybe we need to narrow it down to some industry). I couldn’t write my paper so valid and strong without those sources.
